As civilization has evolved, humans have developed the ability to describe the world around them through writing. However, the limitations of text alone make it difficult to fully capture the wonders of nature. Images, with their intuitive clarity, allow us to grasp intricate details at a glance. Scientific illustration is not only an artistic expression but also a vital research tool. It provides precise scientific information while simultaneously showcasing the artist’s skill, bringing subjects to life with remarkable vibrancy.
Even in an era of advanced photography, scientific illustration remains indispensable. It not only accurately captures the unique characteristics of organisms but also weaves artistry into scientific detail, offering a depth of interpretation that photographs alone cannot achieve.
For this special exhibition, we are honored to collaborate with the National Museum of Natural Science to present a selection of exceptional works from its Scientific Illustration Competition. These stunning illustrations, whether depicting lifelike animals or meticulously rendered plants, exemplify both scientific rigor and artistic excellence, leaving viewers in awe.
Beyond the exhibition, our museum has partnered with the National Museum of Natural Science and MUJI to host scientific illustration workshops, inviting the public to experience this fascinating discipline firsthand. Participants’ creations will also be featured as part of this special exhibition.
Guided by artist Cheng Hsin Chien, attendees will embark on a journey into the world of illustration, progressing from foundational techniques to intricate details. Through this process, they will learn to transform their ideas into captivating artworks while exploring the growth, characteristics, structures, and natural habits of medicinal animals and plants in traditional Chinese medicine.
