What? Chinese Medicine Dregs Can Be Turned into Handicrafts?!
Taiwan's traditional Chinese medicine industry generates approximately 1,500 tons of plant-based waste each year. The most common way to handle these herbal dregs is to turn them into fermented compost or cultivation substrates.
For this special exhibition, the Lifu Museum of Chinese Medicine has collaborated with Guangxing Paper Mill and MUJI Life Research Institute. By combining Guangxing Paper Mill’s papermaking techniques with 20 types of Chinese medicine dregs, they have successfully created Chinese herbal paper—some of which even retain the unique fragrance of the medicinal herbs!
MUJI has further transformed this herbal paper into exquisite handicrafts, and renowned calligraphers Lin Longda, Chen Hsuan-ming, and Chih Yang HUANG have been invited to create calligraphy masterpieces on this special paper.
Who would have thought that Chinese medicine dregs could be turned into art?
This exhibition showcases innovative and sustainable ways to repurpose herbal residues, offering new possibilities for their reuse. Through this display, we hope to raise awareness about traditional Chinese medicine, the importance of resource recycling, and inspire broader applications in the future.
